In Loving Memory: Bobby Murcer (1946-2008)

Bobby Murcer is my all-time favorite "New York Yankees" player, and it was very sad to hear of his passing on Saturady, July 12, 2008. The beloved Yankee legend was 62, and died after a long battle with brain cancer. He passed away peacefully at Oklahoma City Hospital, surrounded by his wife, Kay, his daughter, Tori, and his son, Todd.

Bobby was truly a "Yankee Great", and great Yankee player, who carried on the awesome Yankees tradition with class, grace, and humor, that made it a pleasure to watch him as a player, and listen to him in the broadcast booth.

Also, Bobby Murcer was really a "nice person" who was loved and respected by all -- the Yankees family, by the fans, and throughout baseball.

Bobby, We Will Miss You -- May You Rest In Peace !!!

You will always be [as the title of your book states] "A Yankee For Life".

May Our Lord reserve a special "box seat" for Bobby Murcer in Heaven; and May God always bless him and his family !!!

Bobby, you will always be "number one" in my heart; and, also, "number one" in the hearts of all Yankee fans !!!

Nice Post Jimmy! When the Yanks were in T.O they did not even do a momment of silence. Hopefully they will do it when they get back home..

I'm too young to have seen Bobby Murcer play but I heard him broadcast and have seen how nice and cheery he was all the time. He was greatly loved by the Yankee players, his co-workers and all of the fans. His loss has touched a lot of people. It's was sad to see him go.

Thx for the comment in my last post. About the All-Star Game, it was truly picture perfect. Last night was the definition of historic. Legends all gathered together followed by a legendary game. When Steinbrenner came out it was also a great moment. He seemed to be in tears and when I watched him come out I felt that I was seeing a dad looking at the sight of his baby all grown up. It was truly magical. Perfect night.

Hi, Chris and Vanessa ...

Thanks for the visit !!! ... Bobby Murcer was a great ballplayer and broadcaster; and, a true gentleman ... He will be missed by all of us ... As the title of his book states: Bobby Murcer is a: "Yankee For Life" ... That says it all - Bobby Murcer was a connection to the great Yankee tradition of the past, and it will be sad not hearing him broadcasting Yankee games ... It's just like when Phil Rizzuto passed away. That connection to the Yankees past is lost a little bit more with the passing of both Bobby and Phil ... Did you know that Bobby Murcer is the only Yankees player to have played with both Mickey Mantle and Don Mattingly? ... Now, that's Yankees tradition !!! ... Jimmy ...

Hey, Chris ...

I think it's def that the Yankees will have a "Special Day" for Bobby Murcer; and, also, a "Special Tribute" for Bobby at this year's Yankees "Old-Timers Day" ... It will be very emotional to watch both events ... But, it will be great to see the "out-pouring of love" for Bobby Murcer by all Yankee [and, baseball] fans !!! ... Too bad the Toronto Blue Jays did not have a moment of silence for Bobby Murcer [before Sunday's game - the day after Bobby passed away] ... They should have had that moment in honor of Bobby !!! ... Take care, Chris ... Continued success with your baseball collecting ... Jimmy [27NYY]

Hey, Vanessa ...

Bobby Murcer was a very nice person, and was greatly loved by all ... It will be great to see the special tributes that the Yankees will have for Bobby at this year's Yankees Old-Timers Day; and, also, I think, another special day before this season ends ... There will also be a special day for George Steinbrenner, and I think, the Yankees should put a "Monument" for George in Monument Park; and, also, a special "Plaque" for Bobby Murcer in Monument Park ... Regarding the All-Star Game: It was an awesome game !!! ... Especially, seeing the Hall-of-Famers, and George Steinbrenner on the field before the game ... Now back to the season. There are only 67 games remaining for the Yankees in 2008. They have to start scoring more runs, and go on a long winning streak, because time is running out ... But, somehow, I do think they will win enough games to make it into the playoffs ... It starts by winning tonight's game vs. the A's ... Take care, Vanessa ... Jimmy [27NYY]

No doubt there will be plaques for Bobby and George. It will be interesting to see how the Yankees handle the uniform numbers that Bobby wore. His "first tour" number 1 is already retired for Billy Martin and his "second tour" number 2 will surely be retired for Derek Jeter. Will Bobby be a co-retiree for both?

Hi, Robert ...

Thanks for the visit !!! ... Yeah, the Yankees will certaintly have "Special Days", "Events", and "Tributes" for both George Steinbrenner and Bobby Murcer before this season ends, and, of course, also, at the Yankees "Old Timers Day" ... I think Bobby will be honored with a "plaque"; and, George will be honored with an actual "Monument", as well as, a "plaque" ... But, also, you brought up a great point, Robert, when you mentioned the possibility [or, probability] of the Yankees retiring Bobby Murcer's number ... I kind of overlooked that honor for Bobby, because of the fact that number "one" is already retired in honor of Billy Martin; and, number "two" [obviously] is Derek Jeter's number, and will be retired in his honor - when Jeter retires ... It is interesting, that when Bobby Murcer first joined the Yankees he wore #17 [in 1965 and 1966] ... In 1967 and 1968, Bobby was in the Military ... When he returned to the Yankees in 1969, I guess #17 was given to another player [probably Gene Michael, because that's the number I always remember Gene Michael wearing throughout his Yankees career] ... So, that's when Bobby Murcer started wearing #1 ... Bobby had #1, from 1969 - 1974 ... He was traded to the SF Giants in the winter of '74, and wore #20 with the Giants in 1975-1976 ... Murcer then was traded to the Chicago Cubs, and wore #7 [in honor of Mickey Mantle] in the years 1977-'78-'79 ... A great joy in Bobby Murcer's life was when he was traded back to the Yankees in June of 1979 ... Billy Martin was the Yankees Manager [and, obviously, wore his long-time #1] ... So, Murcer took #2, and that was the number he wore the rest of his Yankees career, until he retired in 1983, when he became part of the Yankees broadcast team ... So, that's brings up the questions: Will the Yankees retire [one of] Bobby Murcer's numbers? ... and, if they do, Which number should [or, will] be retired ? [#1] - [#2] - [#17] ??? ... Robert, now that you got me thinking about this issue, I think the Yankees [probably] should retire Bobby Murcer's number [ in honor of his 40 years in the Yankees Organization - as a great player and broadcaster ] ... And, if his number is going to be retired, it would have to be: [#1] ... This is the number Bobby wore for most of his Yankees career, and I think it would be great to have the [#1] co-retired, in honor of both: Billy Martin and Bobby Murcer !!! ... Again, thanks for the visit, Robert ... Keep up the great work with your comments, and minor league updates, on the mlblog: "Bombers Beat" ... Jimmy [27NYY] ...
